Hi all,
I grew up on Maniac Mansion and have been in love with it my whole life. It is my favorite game literally ever. As such, I've been visiting this page now for a week and am really obsessed with it. I WANT TO HELP!
I do a lot of writing and running of my own website and feel I'd be a great addition to this wonderful universe of characters. The problem is I know practically nothing about Adventure Game Studio. Is there a good place to get a nice tutorial and some help in creating something for this site. It looks like you guys are all experts on here and I'd really love some way to do what you guys are doing so well. I'm pretty much willing to do anything. If you'd be able to use me at all, please respond on here and email me...
I also run a website for my company Kid in a Cape Productions and you can get through to me there as well.

Hi and welcome cinemaguy1,
Thanks for your offer. :)
We really need help in translation or proofreading a lot of things at Maniac Mansion Mania.
Currently we are searching a proofreader for Boogiemans Episode 53 - Klaus strikes Back.
In this case, its not necessary to know much about AGS. :)
-
That sounds great, but unfortunately I don't know any German. I'm great at proofreading English though!
-
I know, we dont need an proofreader for german episodes ;),
so this episode is allready translated to English from the Developer Boogieman.
But needs grammatical polishing and with many lines text, this would be also a lot of work.
-
I'm in and willing to start on that anytime you want. However you want to get me the text is fine. Thanks so much for the opportunity!
-
Ok, great :),
Boogieman will contact you soon. :)
Meanwhile you can download the game and translation sources here ->
http://rapidshare.com/files/142348786/MMM53.zip.html
(game+english.tra+english.txt)
-
Sounds good. I have the english.txt file. I will only edit the English parts and leave the rest as is. Will be done soon.
-
exactly, every 2nd line is the translation line.
if you could keep the form of the file, he can easily import the text file in the game, and make a transation file.
maybe you can play the episode before you start, to get an feel of the game with Boggiemans translated file, if you want.
-
Alright, I can do that! I can't wait to play it!
-
you know how to do that?
if not, you only must klick on winsetup.exe and choose the english translation, then klick save and run.
but i guess the english translation is per defalut in use, so you only have to klick on the MMM*.exe file to play the game.
there is a german walkthrough here -> http://www.maniac-mansion-mania.com/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=256&Itemid=46
if you cant use it, dont hesitate to ask if you stuck somewhere. :)
-
Yeah, already been playing. About halfway through. I went to Yahoo's Babblefish translation for the walkthrough, but haven't needed it yet. It's provides a very rough translation, but you can usually get what it is trying to say. I like the episode so far. Proofreading shouldn't take long. I could finish it up today, but I have to work a lot in the next few days at my job, so I'll probably have it done immediately after that. If you'd need it sooner, I could make that work too.
-
no take your time, it is a lot of text.
the developer boogieman will contact you, then you can talk about the details direct with him.
-
TADA! here he is, the one and only Bòógieman 8) ;D
you are right, my translation is really simple
actually I planed to proofread it myself before I let someone else on it, but I never had the time to do that
the main problem with the translation is, that most sentences are split into more than one lines (these are the lines starting or ending with ...)
and sometimes these lines are not grouped together, so you actually won't be able to see the whole sentence at once :-\
that's why I've put the whole game into the ZIP-file, so you can see the whole sentence/dialog in the game
some texts are proverbs or puns, so I've tried my best to find a matching english equivalent
(i.e. "I've got a feeling like that woman has skeletons in the basement.")
if you have problems catching the meaning of some sentences, just ask me here or send me a PM
I'll frequently check this forum
I check my mails only once a day, so the forum is definitive the faster way ;)
please also check the text in the intro (the starwars-like scrolling text) ;)
this text is not in english.txt, but I'll post it here for you:
Episode LIII
THE KLAUS STRIKES BACK
It is a dark time for Bernard
Bernoulli. It is weekend, but
Mr. Koslowski has assigned a
huge deal of homework to his
students.
The evil bully Klaus ambushed
Bernard after school and forced
him to do his homework for
him.
But Bernard was afraid that
Klaus would make a habit of it.
So he prepared an entrapment
that would teach him once and
for all.
and yes, the "The" in the game title is important
"The Klaus strikes back" is a parody of "The empire strikes back" ;)
at the end of english.txt is the line "??? and Bòógieman"
replace the ??? with the name you want to be mentioned in the credits ;)
(the forum replaces the 3 questionmarks by a smiley)
take as much time as you need
there is no need to hurry
-
hey,was ist mit gludlum passiert?Ich vermiss den ;D
-
Yes, I was/am Gludlum. That names comes from my audio comedy show on my site. He also has an advice column on my site.
-
Boogieman, there are some places in the episode that could sound more natural if worded differently. Would you like me to reword these for you to make them more natural sounding or should I keep what I can of your words?
-
ok, lets make them sound more natural ;)
as long as the sense of the text is still the same I won't mind
as I mentioned before, there are some proverbs and puns that where really hard for me to translate
and there is also a character with french accent and another one with swiss accent, so don't make them too english :P
when you are done, I'll check the new texts to make sure that they still match to the german texts
or you just post these texts here (german + my english version + your english version) so I could tell you if this is ok :)
-
or you just post these texts here (german + my english version + your english version) so I could tell you if this is ok :)
This really would be fun;
not to hype cinemaguy1 or harm Bòógieman or take criticism.
Just to lern and see the little difference, if BM is still OK with it ^^_^^
-
Oh definitely! I'm not wanting to rewrite anything. I hope it didn't come across that way. Just little things, really for clarity. I printed the .txt file today. 87 pages! That's longer than I thought it was! Very impressed Boogieman with the effort. Hope I can do it justice. I'll send you notes after I start. I'm hoping to use this to recognize a little German as well, not to mention learn how to make a game. I love the idea of making my own. (Then you can translate it to German for me...) Heh heh...
-
well, the game uses about 3000 german textlines and I've translated them at once
I did that during work while no one was looking
that's why my translations are so simple ;D ;)
my english skills would allow a much better translation (but still far away from being perfect) ;)
when I first started the game using my english translation, I've noticed that some sentences are not well translated and I wanted to proofread the whole thing again, but then I started working on my next MMM-game and so I've left the translation behind
why have you printed it? are you proofreading on paper? ???
-
No, no. I'm not really proofreading on paper. Just wanted to go over it at work and that was the only way. Also, that way, I looked busy... :)
-
So, interesting problem... My saved game won't load. It continues to load the beginning of the game. That's seriously going to affect my understanding of the game. I need to get back to where I was without starting over every time.
-
maybe you changed the resolution in winsetup.exe?
this is one of the many reasons, if not I cant help really...
-
in fact, that's the only savegame-problem I'm aware of
you have to start the game with the same resolution each time
stick to the resolution 320*200 and use the graphics filter if you want to increase the window-size
do you get any error messages when you load or save the game?
the only way to load and save is by pressing F5 while the mouse-cursor is visible and you are able to control Klaus
a menu window will appear which gives you the choice of loading and saving
there is no fastsave or fastload function in the game
how do you start the game?
do you double-click on MMM-dksz.exe or did you make any shortcuts on your desktop/startmenu?
if so, make sure that the shortcut uses the correct working path
also make sure, that none of the game files is read-only
and I hope you have unzipped MM53.zip and you are not starting the game inside this ZIP-file
last but not least: what OS do you use? windows? linux? etc.
-
OK, I guess I try different resolutions and see what effects I have. I am over halfway done with proofreading, but this might slow me down a little if I can't reload.
Only real problems I'm fixing is some words that were compound words like I'm where it should be I am. We never use the words Rector or canteen either. We use Principal and cafeteria. I would change these. Mostly only changing word order to American syntax is all I have left. It was a very good translation considering. Better than I ever could have done.
I hadn't unzipped it. I will now though.
And I'm on Windows XP.
Great game. Hope to finish it tonight! Proofreading will be done soon too.
-
canteen or cafeteria, it's all the same to me ;) ;D
but I have chosen "Rector" because at one point, Klaus calls him "Rectum Harris"
and I have no idea how to make an equal joke with "Principal", maybe you could help here ;)
I used "I'm", "I'll" and stuff, because all the text is actually speech
and I thought that would make it more speech-like, however ;D
and yes, playing the game out of the ZIP-file causes your savegame problem
use the unzipped-version and you will be fine ;)
but I think your previous savegames are lost unless you find them on your system and copy them into the game folder :-\
and if you want, I could make a translation-file out of your changed english.txt, so you could see your changes while playing the game
and don't forget to check the eastereggs ;)
-
I also noticed you gave the school a European style meaning the entrance floor is the ground floor and the floor above that is the first floor. Technically speaking, in America, most buildings have the entrance floor as the first floor and work up from there. Up to you if this is worth changing. Certainly not a big deal at all.
You also gave European prices to things meaning 4,99$ where as in America we use a period instead of a comma and use the dollar sign first, $4.99. I already changed those around as well. Just for you to know...
-

look closer, I already did it the way you suggested (at least in the translated text)
the german version starts with the ground floor (Erdgeschoss)
the english translation starts with the first floor
you won't find "ground floor" in english.txt ;)
but I have only changed the text, so the background graphics still have signs starting with G for ground floor
I will change the signs in the background graphics, but you do not have to change anything in the translation file ;)
oh and one thing I forgot to mention:
there is an arabian character named Achmed who actually has some problems speaking english ;D
so I did the wrong word order and the 3rd person talking on purpose here ;)
but if you have some ideas how to make him sound more like an arab with poor english skills, you are welcome to change that ;D
-
Were talking for an english version of Achmed,
would it not not be better to agree on one Achmed-style for consistency?
I mean for later translated episodes..
But I guess cinemaguy1 will find the right amount ;)
-
Truthfully, it seems about on target as is in terms of Achmed's speech. I won't be making any changes with syntax there at all. It was written well and I think the episode as is for him should be how future appearances from him should be done. There is one line that starts with three or four i's. Do you want those there as well?
One other thought I had, quantum physics is ordinarily called quantum mechanics in my experience. Not sure if you can use quantum physics. Perhaps something to check out and choose the one you like.
My proofread is done, but unfortunately only on paper. My eyes started to hurt and I went to the paper. I'll work tonight and probably tomorrow as well and hopefully be done.
I'm doing the English walkthrough as well. I assume there's no objection there. If I come up with more specific things, I'll post them here. Hopefully, you'll be pleased. Remember it's all really just recommendations and you have final say on what goes into your game. Hopefully, I can make one in the future! I want to!
-
There is one line that starts with three or four i's. Do you want those there as well?
do you mean lines like
Iii'm ze Bünzli Peter from ze Switzerland.
?
well yes, that is purpose ;)
One other thought I had, quantum physics is ordinarily called quantum mechanics in my experience. Not sure if you can use quantum physics. Perhaps something to check out and choose the one you like.
you mean
"Bio-molecularly quantum physics ...
... in an infrared irradiated vacuum ambiance ...
... effected by electro-magnetic black holes ...
... for advanced learners"?
well, that book title is just a bunch of randomly mixed up scientific sounding words ;D
I am not quite sure if "quantum mechanics" and "quantum physics" is really the same :-\
actually I have used this online translation tool
http://dict.leo.org/?search=Quantenphysik&searchLoc=1&lp=ende&lang=de (http://dict.leo.org/?search=Quantenphysik&searchLoc=1&lp=ende&lang=de)
I'm doing the English walkthrough as well. I assume there's no objection there.
as far as I know, there is only a german walkthrough (not written by me)
so do as you please :)
My proofread is done, but unfortunately only on paper. My eyes started to hurt and I went to the paper.
oh, maybe I should consider changing the credit-line
"No animals were hurt in this game, ..."
;D :P ;)
in my first post in this thread I have added the text of the intro-scene which is not featured in english.txt
so please have a look on that either :-*
-

we have also english walkthroughs for the other translated episodes,
so english walkthrough is a great thing, :)
but we also need the game-description in englisch for the homepage.
here is the german version:
Nachdem Klaus in Episode 8 'Die Abfuhr', Bernard wegen seiner Hausaufgaben unter Druck gesetzt hat, aber daraufhin eine vernichtende Abfuhr bekam, schwörte er geteert und geferdert noch furchtbare Rache. Als direkter Nachfolger zu "Die Abfuhr" setzt diese Episode genau da an, wo Episode 8 aufgehört hat. Klaus bekommt Bernards Streichebuch in die Hände und will sich nun an ihm rächen...
and btw. maybe someone can also translate this one, (overall game-description) :P

I would translate it that way:
In episode 8 'The rebuff', Klaus forced Bernard to do his homework for him, but all he got was a devastating rebuff. Tarred and feathered as he was, Klaus swore terrible revenge. As the direct sequel to "The rebuff" this episode starts where episode 8 ended. Klaus gets hold of Bernards prank book and now he is heading for revenge...
I wonder why the first 'Die Abfuhr' is inside single quotes, but the second is inside double quotes ???
did I write this game description?
maybe we should change that to use either single or double quotes ;)

Wow, that is an automated response. I never sent it. I will gladly turn it off. Had no idea it was sending out. Sorry about that.

No Problem
-
I'll happily do a description, but a direct translation for me wouldn't work very well because I don't know any German at all. I'll try with an online translator and see what I can do.

Well Boogieman, give the assist ;)

Hi, I was hoping to create a master folder with all the character images, backgrounds, items, music and sounds so I know what I can use in creating a game of my own, but with the site being in German, it's hard for me to find these things on my own. Would you guys be able to point (and click) me in the right direction?
-
as you wish :)
http://www.maniac-mansion-mania.com/index.php?option=com_content&task=section&id=2&Itemid=76 (http://www.maniac-mansion-mania.com/index.php?option=com_content&task=section&id=2&Itemid=76)
on the top of the homepage, right below the upper menu bar, you can see three flags
this is the language selection ;)
so click on the british flag and the site will switch to english
but I think the translation is not 100% done yet :-\
-
Well, that was just a little too easy.
-
I'm doing the English walkthrough as well. I assume there's no objection there.
did you make any progress on that?
the users on the AGS forums (http://www.bigbluecup.com/yabb/index.php?topic=35553.0) seem to be unable to play adventures without walkthroughs ::)
and they just don't even try to ask for help :o
maybe they are too scared of the Bòógieman ;D ;)
-
Sorry, was out of town and without internet. I promise to work on the walkthrough still. Should be another few days though until I can get situated. Will send it to you when finished.
-
you don't need to hurry ;)
there is really few response to my game in the AGS forum so far
I think most people just downloaded it but haven't played it yet :-\
