I have been looking into the use of colour for Day of the Tentacle but then I noticed the use of shadows used in DotT as well as other games with similar art styles such as "Sam & Max: Hit the road" and "Full Throttle", all drawn by Peter Chan.
I usually like to use something called a monochrome test for my backgrounds, which is where I turn the image to greyscale (black+white) and see if the background will look good. This is a test used by many great artists such as Maurice Noble but if I can match the style of Peter Chan's backgrounds then it will make the accuracy of the style a lot easier.

I've just done this practise sketch because I felt like it and recently I found out Peter Chan uses a lot of black with his backgrounds rather than normal shading. I still need to understand where to use the blacks and where to use darker colours. This is the result so far.
